Important Announcement: Changes to DJ Lesson Offerings – We are no longer accepting Students until 2025-2026

I wanted to take a moment to share some important updates regarding our DJ lesson offerings. Effective immediately, we will no longer be accepting new students for DJ lessons until 2025/2026.

This decision has not been made lightly, but after careful consideration, I have realised that I need to prioritise my responsibilities as a father to my son, Leo. As many of you may know, being a parent is a full-time commitment, and I have come to the conclusion that I need to dedicate more time to being present in Leo’s life during these formative years.

One of the factors contributing to this decision is the significant amount of time I spend commuting to teach lessons. On average, I spend an hour driving to the lesson location and another hour driving back. This time spent on the road takes away precious moments that I could be spending with my family.

I understand that this news may come as a disappointment to some of you, especially those who were looking forward to starting DJ lessons. Please know that this decision was not made lightly, and I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience it may cause.

For existing students, rest assured that your lessons will continue as scheduled, and I remain fully committed to helping you reach your goals in DJing. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly.

Adult DJ lessons in Melbourne

Have you considered learning to DJ? Why not take up DJ lessons. We offer both one on one and group adult DJ lessons in Melbourne. DJ lessons can explore your passion for music.

There are only two major principles to being a DJ:

Beatmatching
Timing

We can teach more advanced techniques too. We are one of the few DJ’s who mastered using 3 turntables at once.

Unlike other DJ’s who are teaching lessons, we have lesson plans and actual learning material to make sure you learn all the tricks to the trade.

We can teach you to mix in any style of music but initially, we would recommend electronic music, because this has been structured to be mixed by DJ’s. Once you have learnt basic music theory we can move on to different styles of music.

Our COVID19 approach with adult DJ lessons

To ensure that we prevent the spread of COVID we are:

Wiping our console down before and after each lesson with anti-bacterial wipes.
Using UV light in an attempt to kill any bacteria or viruses that may be present.
Maintaining social distancing.
Hand sanitising before entry.
We will wear a mask and we can provide a mask for you or the student.
If you have any other requests we are flexible and able to work with you to provide you with a safe environment to learn to DJ.

For the very first lesson adult DJ lesson we recommend a 2-hour booking. 1-hour lessons are available.

Group DJ lessons

We have a fun and exciting group DJ lesson that involves a maximum of two.

How We Structure DJ Lessons

How are adult DJ lesson structured?

We try to structure our lessons so that we first show for about 10-20 minutes, then we will ask you to actively learn by beat matching songs followed by us making two recordings focused on:

Beatmatching.
Timing.

When you become more advanced we will begin teaching loops acapella drops and 3 deck sets.

We will set homework which involves:

Listening to both recordings and comparing their techniques.
Creating a SoundCloud account and uploading a new recording they made alone so we can give some feedback. The feedback given is an additional service free of charge but is limited to one mix for every booking that was made.

To help reinforce the learning process for our adult DJ lesson we will provide you with a simplified DJ lesson booklet explaining all the knobs and buttons on the mixer, CDJ’s and the principles behind beatmatching and timing.

What We Teach You

What we teach in our adult DJ lesson

We try to offer a comprehensive but simplified lesson that will allow you to pick up the basics skills that are required to DJ with ease.

You will learn the layout of a mixer and what each knob does.
We will teach you on a midi controller and DJ program.
We will teach the principles of beatmatching and timing.
The basic principles of music theory.
Loops
Acapella Drops
3 Deck sets
CDJ use is not taught due to the redundancy of this machine, however, the details explaining how to use them are listed in the booklet provided.

My history and career as a DJ

I have been very fortunate to play both nationally, internationally and on the radio, supporting some of the worlds biggest DJ’s under my former DJ name D.TRAK.

I have had the pleasure of supporting some of the worlds best artists including Daniel Kandi ranked in DJ magazines top 100 DJs, David Deejay ranked Europes number 1 DJ, Grant Smilie from Australia’s own TV Rock and many more. I am also in the process of publishing my book based on my DJ career,

We will issue homework once the lesson has been completed, this homework does require the purchase of Native Instruments S2. This way you can make a recording of you DJing.

With the following lessons, we focus on how each recording could have been improved focusing on helping the student identify where they can improve.

We need you to create a SoundCloud page so we can listen to any new recordings and give feedback.

Recommended equipment

For every adult DJ lesson, we will come to you with our equipment, including Native instruments S8 midi controller, laptop and speakers, the midi controller is the main device used in the industry.

We do recommend to invest in DJ equipment for yourself so you can practice on it and reinforce the learning process. Once you own equipment it can be a great way to unwind. We do recommend the purchase of a controller that comes with a program. Such as Native Instruments S2 that comes with Traktor a DJ program which is a German company based in Berlin. Traktor is regarded as an industry leader for innovation.

Native Instruments S2 midi controller

We have a recommended supplier for where to purchase the S2 from. DJ City is one of Australia’s largest DJ stores with the goal of having the best prices in the market. The S2 is the ultimate device for beginners to learn on because it gives them all the features of the larger midi controllers. It is also used by professional DJ’s some who even work for us. Native instrument products are made in Germany and are made to last. The S2 is the best controller to own when starting out as a DJ, plus the Traktor software is compatible with other Traktor products which makes upgrading easy. Why do we recommend the S2 over Pioneers DDJ SB3?

They are very similar controllers and priced similarly, however, with my experience we have found that Traktor is the superior program giving a clearer and better visual display. Other reasons to avoid purchasing the Pioneer DDJ SB3 include the fact it has extra costs to upgrade to a Serato. The controller only comes with Serato light, which is limited in comparison to Traktor pro which free comes with the S2. Some limitations of Serato light include the inability to record your sets, unless you upgrade to Serato pro. This means your child cannot learn from their recordings or do the homework we set out for them. We have also encountered issues with one student who had purchased the Pioneer DDJ SB3 and returned it due to a fault with the device itself. It was unable to sync music and the beats per minute were inconsistent unlike Traktor, which played the same songs flawlessly.

Drive out fees may be applied with additional charges for long distance lessons.

Multi Lesson Discounts

Multi-Adult DJ lesson price discounts

Multi-lesson discounts are available.

Book 3 lessons to receive a 5% discount. A 50% payment is due before the first lesson and the second 50% payment is due before the second lesson. All payments are non refundable.

Book 5 lessons to receive a 10% discount. A 50% Payment is due before the first lesson with the final payment to be made prior to the commencement of the 3rd lesson. All payments are non refundable

Drive out fees may apply. We can only offer these services during the weekday or during the day on weekends due to our main business commitment.

Prices may vary due to your location. A minimum booking time of 2 hours is required for the initial adult DJ lesson. Some areas will incur a $40 drive out fee if they are some distance from our base location.

We do recommend that the lesson is one on one because our approach is based on active learning through actual play, the more students that are present the less time they have to use the equipment.
