Nestlé Christmas Party a DJ & Operations Manager Conversation
It was a December Christmas party at The Duke. Nestlé had booked the dining hall from 6.30pm and the room was filling with the kind of energy that only comes from a team that has genuinely earned a night off.
Before the formalities began a factory manager approached me to ask about the microphone. While I was handing it to him we started talking. I was in the middle of my MBA at the time and I had developed a habit of making the most of every conversation with everyone I could soak up knowledge from.
I asked him about his work, what the factory produced, what the rhythm of a year looked like from where he stood.
He told me about the the lines, the scale, the consistency required to produce something millions of people reach for without ever thinking about where it came from.
I told him something I meant, that the chocolate had saved me more times with my partner than he would ever know. That what they made brought real joy to people in small private moments that nobody ever thinks to thank anyone for.
He laughed and moved on.
Speeches
During the speeches the line manager stood up to thank the team for the year. He spoke about the work, about what they had built together and then he mentioned me specifically. He said “sometimes it takes someone from outside to remind you of the value of what you do every day. Even though the job is hard, we need to remember that happiness we bring to each an every person when they eat what we make.”
The room responded to it in a way that had nothing to do with music.
I was standing at the booth and I felt the weight of it. These were people who showed up every day to make something that mattered to people without ever hearing about it. That night they heard it. From their own manager. In a room full of their colleagues.
